Why Wilderness?--Protecting Our Public Lands

The League of Women Voters of Thurston County is hosting this General Meeting as a way to inform members and the public at large about issues that affect public lands.

The current administration is demonstrating blatant disregard for the incredible value of our public lands.  Currently in congress there are several bills, resolutions and budget cuts that threaten clean air, water, forests, wildlife, rivers and recreation. One of the most damaging is H.R. 861 that would abolish the environmental protection agency!  Another equally devastating is H.R.2936 the Lawless Logging bill that would allow unregulated logging, without environmental review, weaken the endangers species act, and remove judicial review and the citizens objection process form timber sales!   As if that were not enough H.R. 232:  Proposes to sell off 2.2 million acres of national forest land that will then be managed for timber production without any regard for environmental devastation. Silence will not protect our public lands.  There will never be anymore wilderness, we must protect what we have left.

Great Old Broads for Wilderness, Thurston County Sierra Club and South Sound Audubon are co-sponsoring this meeting where the guest speaker will be George Wuerthner.  He is an author, professional photographer, and ecologist. Currently he is the director of ecological projects for Foundation for Deep Ecology
