2017-2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Elected at Annual Meeting for a Two Year Term
Continuing -- Serving 2nd Year of Two Year Term
Appointed By the Board for a One Year Term
We’ve been busy these last weeks! Our Annual Meeting at the Olympia Friend’s Meeting House was a very positive gathering. Good company, good food and many good ideas generated for our upcoming work. We elected new Board members are pictured above. We thanked leaving Board members Karen Tvedt, Valerie Hammett, Dawn Gibbs, Karen Verrill, Peggy Bruton, Allyson Brooks and Paula Holroyde. These women have all have been outstanding contributors to our League!
Next, it was off to Seattle for our State League Conference June 2-4. R Peggy Smith and Sandra Herndon went as State Board members. Pat Dickason, Annie Cubberly, Elyette Weinstein, Darlene Hein, Paula Holroyde and Karen Verrill were our delegates. The conference theme was “DEMOCRACY: Must Be Present to Win”. We heard from inspiring speakers, attended informative workshops, and helped participate in the workings of our State League. We heard from Jessica Rohloff, League of Women Voters United States Board Member about “A Transformational Journey” that LWVUS is embarking on, which we will be hearing more about over the next months. It’s always inspiring and motivating to learn from other WA leagues…we all will be sharing our learning with you over the next months.
And now we turn our attention to the work of the summer---Candidate Forums June 24th, VOTE 411 updating, our Treasure Sale on July 29th and 30th, and our Board retreat on August 4th. And the elected Board members will appoint 4 more members to positions on the Board! We welcome volunteers and your good ideas! Thank you for being a part of our great Thurston League of Women Voters! As our foremothers said: Huzzah, Huzzah, Huzzah!

LWV-TC Annual Meeting: A Member's View, by Marilyn Funk
Dawn Gibbs was honored at our 2017 Annual Meeting, for the contribution she's made to our own League.
She played a huge role in so many endeavors: getting our website up and running, providing the Newsletter on time, giving her time and attention to our many voter registration drives, setting up and organizing our luncheon fund drive and membership work. And this list does not do her justice. It will literally take three members to fulfill the volunteering she has done. Our gratitude was shared by all at the Annual Meeting. Indeed, we were all so pleased to learn that she'd been given an overnight at Kalaloch with her husband, to say, Thank you, Dawn, for all you have done for the benefit of the League.
Next, we heard a quiet but passionate assessment from Paula Holroyde, who is now hosting a new program called Coffee with League, a Tuesday morning gathering that meets to discuss local, state and national issues. Well attended, the group supplies a much needed way to stay connected with League friends and upcoming programs.
Recently moved from Maui, Paula spoke about the value of community and how easily it is lost, especially as an area experiences rapid growth. Although she was not billed as a Keynote Speaker, she certainly played that role.
Finally, President Dickason proposed a local study on the criminal justice system in Thurston County. The first study to be proposed in over ten years was voted and approved by the membership. Watch for plans to be announced and consider joining the committee to do the research. We’ll all learn together!
TREASURE SALE ON TAP - We need donations, lots and lots of donations!
Seventh LWV-TC Treasure Sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 &13.??
We need donations to make this a grand event. Books, CD’s, furniture, antiques, toys, kitchen ware, jewelry, plants, or that unique item you finally decide you have held on to for too long. Please no clothes or exercise equipment.
Volunteers are also need to make this event successful. Sale coordinator, Fran Williams has done this before, and she has a road map all laid out.
